honestly? i know people usually say ‘go for it’ or whatever, but there’s just too many variables that make it hard for me to give a good opinion. who initiates the convos? does he seem interested in talking to you specifically about whatever it is u talk about of not? and if he likes someone else then thats gonna be pretty hard. but, if you feel like messaging him, just find some mutual interest (thats what i do). sorry i couldn’t give better advice oops
